Kernel Capital confirm Dr Jim Walsh as Advisor

March 18, 2008: Kernel Capital are pleased to confirm the further strengthening of its team with the appointment of Dr Jim Walsh PhD to its Advisory Board. He has 20 years experience in the Healthcare Industry with a focus on Diagnostics. He was most recently COO of Trinity Biotech Plc, (NASDAQ: TRIB) an Irish Diagnostics company where he is currently a Non Executive Director. He is interim CEO of Stokes Bio Ltd. a Kernel Capital investee Company specialising in the area of Molecular Diagnostics. He also holds Non Executive Director positions with PuriCore Plc. (LSE: PURI) a US based Healthcare company and a number of early stage biotechnology companies. Previously Dr. Walsh was Managing Director of Cambridge Diagnostics Ltd. (CDL) a wholly owned subsidiary of Inverness Medical Innovations Inc (AMEX: IMA). Before joining CDL he worked with Fleming GmbH as R&D Manager. Born in Ireland in 1958, Dr Walsh is a graduate of the National University of Ireland and holds a Doctorate in Inorganic Chemistry and Post Doctorate qualifications in Immunochemistry. The announcement of Dr Walsh follows the vacancy arising from the appointment in January 2008 of former Advisory Board Member Dr Daniel O'Mahony as a fulltime Partner at the firm.

Dr Walsh has had a close working relationship with Kernel Capital for a number of years. In 2006 he was appointed consultant and interim CEO to Stokes Bio a Limerick based investee of the firm. Members of the Kernel Capital Advisory Board assist the firm where appropriate in sourcing and assessing investment opportunities within their domain knowledge. There are currently two members on this Advisory Board, Dr Daniel McCaughan and Dr Jim Walsh.

Following the announcement in November 2007 of the Kernel II Fund, the firm now has €110m in venture capital funds and continues to strengthen its team. Over the past three years they have been one the most active venture capital firms in the country having made over twenty five investments in a portfolio of nine companies. One of which (Merrion Pharmaceuticals) has floated on IEX and one (Farran Technology) sold to Smiths Industries. The firms Investment Executives and Advisory Board Members have held directorships and or investments in more than a hundred companies. Over the years they have been instrumental in numerous corporate finance and IP licensing transactions totalling several hundred million Euros. They are the named inventors on over thirty patents and have been instrumental on the filing of an additional thirty patents on behalf of others. Members of Kernel team have authored a large number of papers published in leading scientific and technical journals and books and have presented and spoken at numerous international conferences.
